Slumberparty for the 3 of Us

This weekend I finally cried uncle, and bought a new mattress set. (The sheets were $14 at Ross- Luxury microfiber - aren't they wonderful?) We were both in pain for so long on the bed we were sleeping on, but didn't want to change it for three reasons:

  1. The cost - have you SEEN the cost of a good bed these days? With all the other mcNugget related expenses coming up, I didn't want to spend anything 'unnecessarily'
  2. I didn't know what would make us feel better. Nobody rates mattresses online, and without booking stays at friends houses and hotels, how should I know what to purchase?
  3. I was writing off the pain as my body instead of my bed. I've always had a bad back - which has been super (knock on wood) during this whole pregnancy - and only ever needed a bit of yoga and exercise to fix it. That's not the bed's fault.

But my poor husband started taking to the couch in the middle of the night over the bed because of really bad hip pain. Then my hips started hurting from all this extra weight (we're both side sleepers now - him because of the snoring and me because of mcNugget). I have been waking up every few hours in pain - but who's to say its not just the pregnancy? But then, what happens when neither of us are getting sleep because of mcNugget's mid-night cries and and uncomfortable bed?? Anyway, when our 15 year old Sleep Number pump gave up for the second time in 2 years and they wanted $300 for a new pump, I knew it was time to start doing some work on finding a new mattress.

I knew that going cheap would get me nowhere, except back in the stores next year. Our last mattress purchase, an innerspring, is setup in our guestroom. I love it when it's just me, but the two of us roll together when we sleep because it started to sag the year after we got it. It is a full, which is probably too small for our sized people.

Enter in memorial day furniture sales and financing, discussions with my research-loving dad, and a trip around a few blogs on the internet, and I knew which one we were going to try out: Sealy's Springfree Beachside mattress. It's Latex, which breathes well for the husband, comes with a 20 year warranty, and was uber comfy in the store. The only one more cushy was the Sealy Springfree Rivercrest - which has a few more inches of latex on top of it (which, if we ever need it, we can get a thick latex mattress topper), but I liked the firmness of the Beachside. Plus it was a bit cheaper and was given good reviews on one of the blogs, even for "bigger" people like us.

We ended up buying the mattress set, a new bed frame, a waterproof mattress protector and two latex pillows from Raymour & Flannigan - free next day delivery and old mattress removal, hello!? Plus the typical price match + 5% if you find a better price in the next 30 days, and a 45 day try-out period. The delivery guys were less than stellar, and the husband got himself into a bit of a fit (note, never tell an experienced mover what will and will not fit up the stairs!). Once I called though, they gave us the split box springs at the same cost as the single box spring - something we had decided not to splurge on if not necessary, so they fixed their issue once the delivery guys got back to the store.

Last night was the first time we slept on it, and no hip-pain at all for either of us, so its definitely a step in the right direction. It was definitely comfortable, and I couldn't feel the husband moving around almost at all - I certainly couldn't hear him!

But, as it was the first night, I'm still hesitant to say it's a cure-all just yet. My back was a little sore before I went to bed, and thereby still sore when I woke up... and I my arms fell asleep a number of times during the night - which means I must have started sleeping on them again. I'm guessing I need to adjust to it for a few weeks. I'll review again soon to let you know how it's working out. For right now, Bo, me and McNugget are more than happy to snuggle with the pups on our newly purchased bed.
